Dalton is a 2 year old. 40 lb. neutered male in Fair Haven, NJ
About 18 months ago we adopted Dalton and we have worked with him to overcome his reactiveness and aggression, and it just isn't getting any better. While we understand the nature of cattle dogs, his behavior goes beyond what we can handle. The rescue will not take him back due to his behavior.
He is housebroken, crate trained for night time and knows some basic tricks. He has no health concerns. Dalton is a typical cattle dog, who also has reactivity. He will chase cars, bicycles and people. He is initially aggressive with other dogs but warms up. He currently lives with a small dog and they get along great. He needs a home with a fenced in yard to roam in, and requires a lot of activity. I would recommend he not be in a home with small children. He needs some structure and training to overcome and tame his reactivity.
We have worked with a trainer; he is medicated on fluoxetine, and CBD. His aggression toward strangers and other dogs has existed from the beginning, but with treats from strangers he eventually calms down. However, this behavior prevents us from trusting him around anybody not in our immediate family. We can't walk him regularly, as he goes after anything that moves. Cars, bikes, other people, and dogs. He has "gone after" my wife and myself, on multiple occasions, and we are afraid it is only a matter of time before something bad happens. Sadly, his guarding and aggression toward my wife and I seems to be getting worse. He has caused bruising and small broken skin cuts. He mostly goes after hands and feet/lower legs. I would say he "snaps" at people, not really intending to bite, more of a nip.
Unfortunately, his unpredictable nature and outbursts are taking a toll on our home.
He can be a very sweet dog, and is loving to his people, (most of the time) but he is also unpredictable and potentially could hurt another person or dog. He really needs time in a space and with people who can work better with him on his reactivity. I am very sorry we are just not that home.
Dalton is a very loving dog, but his reactivity can be difficult to handle. Once he trusts you, he will be a snuggle bug. We love him dearly but our home is just not the right place for him.
