Axel is a 6 year old, 65 lb. neutered male in Eastampton, MA
Axel is a 6-year-old red Australian Cattle Dog (Red Heeler) who is neutered, microchipped, house trained, and crate trained. He has been a very loved member of my family, and making the decision to rehome him has been extremely difficult. I am looking for a home that will understand his personality, respect his boundaries, and give him the structure and patience he needs to feel safe and successful.
Axel is a very sweet, affectionate dog with the people he knows and trusts. He loves his people deeply and enjoys spending time with them. He is also comfortable playing with dogs, cats, and people when he has had enough time to become familiar and comfortable with them. He loves his crate and willingly goes into it overnight and whenever he needs a safe, quiet place to relax. He is house trained and accustomed to being crated when nobody is home.
Axel's biggest challenge is fear and anxiety. He can become extremely overwhelmed by unfamiliar people, sudden movements, loud or high-pitched noises, and changes to his environment. He can also become protective of the people he considers his family. Because of this, he needs an experienced adopter who is comfortable managing a fearful, reactive dog and who will be patient rather than expecting him to immediately trust new people.
Axel would do best in a calm, predictable home without children. I would not consider him an appropriate dog for a home with children because he can become fixated on children and may react to sudden movements or sounds by nipping. He is also not a good fit for a home with frequent visitors or a highly social household where unfamiliar people are regularly coming and going. A quieter home with predictable routines would be much better for him.
Although Axel is capable of living and interacting peacefully with dogs and cats that he knows and trusts, he has a history of fear-based and anxiety-related biting toward dogs and cats as well as adults. Because of this, I believe his placement should be evaluated carefully based on the individual animals and home environment. A home where he can be introduced to other pets slowly and safely, with appropriate management and separation when necessary, would be important.
Axel has a moderate-to-high desire for exercise and enjoys having opportunities to move, explore, and play, but his anxiety can sometimes make exercise difficult in unfamiliar environments. Changes in his surroundings can cause him to become distracted, frightened, or overwhelmed. He would benefit from someone who can provide regular physical and mental exercise while also understanding that he may need time to become comfortable with new places. A securely fenced yard would be strongly preferred so he can safely exercise without the risk of getting loose.
Axel has basic household training and is house and crate trained. He is comfortable spending time in his crate and sees it as a safe space. He has not had formal obedience training that I am aware of, so an adopter who is interested in continuing positive-reinforcement training and helping him build confidence would be ideal.
Axel currently has some health concerns related to his gut health. He has experienced issues that appear to contribute to excess yeast and itchy skin, and he will need continued attention to his health and veterinary care. He is neutered and microchipped. Because I am currently experiencing financial instability, one of the difficult factors in my decision to rehome him is that I am not able to provide the level of veterinary care and ongoing financial support that I want to be able to provide for him.
I am also making this decision because I hope to have children within the next few years. Given Axel's fear, reactivity, and history of nipping and biting, I do not believe it would be responsible for me to put him in a situation where he would be expected to live safely around young children. I love Axel very much, and rehoming him is not a decision I am making because I no longer want him. I am making it because I believe finding a home that is better suited to his needs would ultimately give him the best chance at a safe and happy life.
I want Axel's new home to be carefully evaluated rather than simply finding the first person willing to take him. I would want to speak with potential adopters about their experience with fearful or reactive dogs, their household, other pets, visitors, daily routine, exercise plans, and how they would manage Axel's triggers. I would also want everyone in the household to understand his behavioral history and agree to the management and boundaries he needs. I am willing to work with the rescue and potential adopter to determine whether a particular home is genuinely appropriate for Axel and to discuss transportation arrangements to his new home.
My priority is finding Axel a safe, stable, permanent home where he can be understood for who he is rather than judged solely by his difficult behaviors. I would prefer that any adoption fee or donation be handled according to the rescue organization's policies rather than being a source of profit for me. My primary goal is simply to make sure Axel is placed somewhere that can give him the care, patience, structure, and understanding he deserves.
