Looking to rehome a little dog who stole my heart named Aubie (Oh-Bee) by mid-August. She is a 6-year-old Red Heeler / Beagle mix who thrives on routine and structure and loves having a job. She's happiest when her day includes a healthy balance of physical exercise and mental enrichment. Her current living situation (in a crate in a New York City apartment) is not able to give her either of those things, and she deserves better.

Aubie is very smart, picks up new things in record time, and, like many overachievers, comes with a side of anxiety and an overwhelming desire to supervise absolutely everything. Maybe that's just the herding dog software running in the background. She's also a certified Velcro dog, so you'll never have to use the bathroom alone again.

Aubie has a playful spirit and she’s obsessed with fetch. She responds well to training and will do anything for a treat. When it comes to playing with other dogs, Aubie does great until her anxiety takes over and she can get defensive.

I would describe Aubie as reactive to dogs that she doesn't know. She will often bark and pull on her leash if she sees another dog outside. When we lived together, we worked on this extensively and she improved a lot. Her new medication seems to help with this as well. In the past, play time with other dogs (even ones she is familiar with) has sometimes devolved into fights, which she loses every time. One such time, she got into a fight with a dog that she has lived with her entire life. Her owner (my ex-partner) went to physically break up the fight, which resulted in a single tooth puncture in the arm that required a medical visit. Following this, she went to behavior school, was muzzle trained, and education collar trained. Since, Aubie has spent time at dog parks and in the care of professional handlers/trainers that have exposed her to other dogs in a healthy, non-reactive manner.

For this reason, it would be better for her to be the only dog in the household, or to go to a very experienced dog owner. Aubie is incredibly intuitive and empathetic, and even though she can be a little territorial with her guard dog instincts, with a confident pack leader to provide guidance and remind her that she doesn't actually run the household, she’ll settle in well and be a great companion.

Aubie is a wonderful dog and a great friend, and it breaks my heart that I can’t keep her. My friend is giving her up because she does not fit into a New York City lifestyle and has considered surrendering her. I am not in a living situation or career where I can keep her, but we are bringing her to Colorado in the hopes she can find a new home where she has space to run around and make a new family or person happy. In order to save her life, I am trying to give her one she deserves.
