Annie found her way out of the rain once — a six-month-old pup, alone under a neighbor's shed, and she's been part of our family in Birmingham, Alabama ever since. Now eight, she's the kind of dog who picks her person and loves them with everything she has: loyal, affectionate, and happiest curled up close by. We're heartbroken to be looking for her next home. The honest reason is a joyful one for us but means a change for her: we're starting a family this year, and Annie has always been a little hesitant around children and babies. Rather than wait and risk a stressful surprise for her once a little one arrives, we want to find her the calm, devoted home she deserves now, while we can take our time getting it right.

Here's who she is: an indoor girl, completely house-trained with no accidents, who knows how to use her doggy door for bathroom breaks. Her days are pleasantly low-key, daily neighborhood walks, plenty of toys, a good game of fetch, and the occasional burst of zoomies just to keep us laughing. At eight, her energy is wonderfully chill; she's well past the wild puppy years and settles in easily. She's great with other dogs (she lived happily alongside our female for years, though she gravitates toward males), and good with cats too — she'll sometimes give one a long, thoughtful stare, but there's never been an ounce of ill intent behind it.

With people, Annie is devoted to those she trusts, but she's shy with strangers and doesn't love when new folks reach to pet her right away. Give her a little patience, though, and she'll come to you on her own terms for a snuggle — and it's worth the wait. She's leash-trained (a professional did the work), though she's due for a refresher and still pulls a fair bit on walks. She is not an escaper, reliably comes when called, and has never given us a moment's worry there.

In fairness to the right adopter: Annie is a classic sensitive heeler who thrives on calm and routine, and she's best suited to an adults-only home (grown, dog-savvy teens welcome). She's in perfect health, spayed, microchipped, and fully vaccinated (records attached). She's about 30 lbs.
