Zephyr is a 12 year old, 45 lb. neutered male in Richmond, VA.
Intelligent older gentleman seeks companion for his golden years.
Meet Zephyr. His short and rather round physique belies his strength, agility and giant personality (and a voice to match). Though not much of a snuggler, he will gaze at you with intense adoration from across the room while you read or watch TV, and will nestle up to you for the occasional head scratch.
His energy has waned over the years and he gets confused a bit more easily than in his youth, but his mind is still sharp. His eyes light up at the word “training,” and he will delight you with his eagerness to learn and practice his skills. His true passion is nosework; he earned his NACSW NW1 title, and would have succeeded at NW2 were it not for the limitations of his human teammate. His ideal person will engage in fun training sessions daily using positive methods, and will serve as one half of an ace nosework team. He is a bit of a foodie and will do anything for a treat, which makes training with food rewards a snap. On the flip side, he has a hard time with the presence of human food, and will need help curtailing his begging behaviors, which may involve whining and barking. He loves exploring the neighborhood, parks and trails and walks very well on leash, but prefers to avoid other dogs.
Zephyr is a bit of an anxious guy, and has a mild bite history related to guarding and body sensitivity in combination with other stressors. We worked extensively with trainers and a behaviorist and he is doing well on medication. He has achieved a new level of calm and has gone several years without biting. However, there is a toddler in our family and we have concluded that the unpredictability inherent with young kids is not a good fit for Zephyr. As a result, we've made the difficult decision to look for a new home for our pal of over a decade. We will miss his impish personality but know that his best chance for continued success and happiness lies elsewhere, with an experienced cattle dog owner in a home that can provide the calm structure he needs, along with plenty of time for training and mental stimulation.
Zephyr is house trained, has been crate trained but may need a refresher, nosework trained with birch and anise, and knows many cues. He has lived with a cat for years but we don’t know how he would react to a new cat. He would do best without other dogs or young kids. We will provide his crate, expen, bed, collection of puzzle toys, and a starter supply of his food and medicine. We are willing to transport him up to 300 miles for the right home.
