Winston is a 6.5 year old, 55 lb. neutered male in Cleveland, OH
Winston is a smart, sensitive, lovable and energetic dog with a big heart and an even bigger brain who is looking for his forever best friend. True to his herding roots, Winston thrives when he has a purpose – he’s not just looking for a forever family, but for a “job.”
Winston is deeply loyal and forms strong bonds with his people. He is rather cuddly for a cattle dog and loves to snuggle up next to your leg on the couch or beneath your feet but prefers to sleep on his dog bed at night. He loves car rides, hikes (he is trained on the e-collar and does great with it!), and playing fetch. He loves dog treats and bully sticks though he has never had “people food.”
Winston knows commands like sit, stay, lay down, roll over, heel, and “out,” and is house trained. He is not the best on the leash, but we did have him in leash training a few years ago where he learned “heel” and he will often correct his leash pulling with that command.
Winston currently lives in a home with another 6-year-old heeler and three-year-old toddler. Winston is great with our toddler and loves to play with other kids too, especially those who are a little bit older and can throw the ball/stick for him (fetch is his favorite). Winston would do wonderfully in a family environment where kids are around and where he can truly be part of the daily routine, but it is probably best that he be the only dog in the family.
Because Winston has so much intelligence and energy, he needs more than just the bare minimum. He does best with plenty of mental stimulation, structure, and activity. Without that outlet, he becomes extremely anxious and vocal (he tends to whine). He would thrive in a home where someone has the time, consistency, and understanding of working breeds to keep Winston’s mind and body engaged.
Winston has been on anti-anxiety medication for probably about two years now; this was part of our effort to help get him some relief from his anxiety and whining, but we are not sure it helps much.
This has been a very difficult decision for our family. We have had Winston since we rescued him at around 3 months old. We love him dearly, but with a young child at home and another on the way, we simply cannot give Winston the level of engagement he needs and that he truly deserves. Winston has only become more anxious and whiney the less time we are able to devote to him. We want him to live a fulfilling life in a home that understands his needs and can give him the structure, purpose, and companionship he so badly craves and that we are unable to provide for him.
If you are looking for a loyal, intelligent companion who will reward your time and energy with unwavering devotion, Winston may be the perfect fit. Please reach out to me with any questions or to request more pictures, videos, or details about Winston. Thank you.
