Rue is a 1 year old, 32 lb. spayed female in Gloucester, MA

Name: Rue (A.K.A Rooster)
Breed: cattle dog mixed possibly with a jack russell or rat terrier because of her size

Ru is one of the most amazing and loyal dogs I’ve ever met. This girl will follow you everywhere just like your shadow. She is a big fan of treats, is super food motivated, is great at training and agility. She has done some obedience training but would benefit from more as well. Not only will she be your best friend, she will be your dog's best friend. We think a gentle giant or even a dog with good boundaries, that doesn’t mind a silly high energy pup like Ru would be a perfect match. For fun she loves hiking, playing with pups, learning new things, car rides, puzzles, and truly loves to make her people proud. After all the fun she loves to cuddle on the couch curled like a cat between your legs, or chew a bully in her bed. This dog loves with her whole heart and your bond with her will be unbreakable. We really feel she is a very special girl with the brightest of futures ahead.

Important bullet points of behavioral issues:

  • She had an incident where an older person reached down to pet her and it made her nervous and she nipped them in the hand. It was not violent but seemed to come from fear and wanting space (she is better at greeting off leash, humans and dogs and she has no bite record recorded)

  • At a vet appointment at around 4-5 months old, she went for a vet tech’s hand while getting routine shots, since then our vet has asked us to muzzle and medicate her for appointments. We haven’t had a ton of success with the muzzle but the medication has helped with the appointments overall.

  • At home she has bitten one of us on the hand while reaching down into a dark cabinet to grab something. We are not entirely sure what this stems from but we place caution in these sensitive areas.

  • In her cage at night when closing the door she has lunged at the door while barking aggressively. We use treats and positive reinforcement to help us in this case.

  • She has growled and lunged for our hand when we are taking away something she really wants but knows she can’t have (ex; shoes) We use distraction and treats to help with this as well.

We believe what is most common between all these instances of reactivity was exhaustion and fear. We also have to mention that we found out that the people who we adopted her from were not treating her and her mother well and have decided that she absolutely will not be returned back there. We have received the support of our local MSPCA on this decision as well, and since then we have reported these people to law enforcement. This combined with her breed leads us to believe she would benefit from the following:

  • A person with experience with dogs with behavioral issues and/or is familiar with working line dogs

  • Female owner preferred (less trusting with men but not impossible)

  • No young children or small pets

  • Another dog in the household to show her the ropes and that she can trust.

  • Fenced yard, better yet, a large plot of land to roam

  • An active lifestyle to match her energy

  • Patience, kindness, and lots of love

We love this dog dearly, she is so important to us, but have found that as much as we try to make it work, we still feel she would thrive in an environment better suited for her needs. As stated before we think an owner who can match her fun lifestyle, a big yard and a possible dog pal would make her so happy.

We will happily send along more info if you have any questions

We really would love and appreciate staying in contact to receive photos and updates about her.
