Dakota is a 7 year old, 45 lb. neutered male in Hickory, NC>

My name is Dakota and I love tummy rubs and scratches behind my ears. I am a sweet boy who loves to shower kisses on my mom and dad. My first 4 years were not very nice. I was chained outside and essentially lived in the brush. I was ‘rescued’ in the fall of 2018 and found a temporary home-I had a roof over me! At that time I was found to have heartworms and was successfully treated.

My current family found me in January of 2019 and I have remained with them. Until the spring of 2020 we lived on a golf course with no neighbors. I could run and expend energy. That changed when we moved to a retirement village with cars, people and dogs everywhere and no place for me to run.

I only used to bark when persons came to the front door at the old house. Today I bark at people, cars and everything else. I have no chance to burn off energy in a positive way. Several times I have herded smaller dogs and they get scared when I nip.

I love my mom and dad, and protect them. I am completely housebroken. I love my walks, but really love to RUN! I am very very loyal. I especially love the attention I didn’t receive for so long-please rub my ears, and I will ALWAYS lay down for a tummy rub.

From Dakota's people:

Until last week, he had only herded other smaller dogs-the nipping caused only minor wounds. My wife had contained him in a bedroom as service persons were inside. When she tried to exit the room-he bit the back of her calf. The skin was broken and some small bruising-all of which is healing without medical attention. A professional trainer JUST advised us that he MUST have an “active” home and ‘active family’ where he gets his exercise-EVERY day. He simply cannot here in a retirement village. He has not been able to run in 18 months, and when I just told the trainer this he said he regarded us keeping him in this situation would be ‘animal cruelty’.

Dakota is in Hickory, NC.
