Bailey is a medium-sized adult male Australian Cattle Dog. He has had basic obedience training. He needs a job, as he is trying to herd the horses. A home with a lot activity would be great.

Connecticut Humane Society   Westport, CT   203-227-4137   info@cthumane.org

Nina is a 7 year-old Australian Cattle Dog that is currently at the CT Humane Society in Westport. She was brought in because she would run away and her owners were not willing to deal with it. She was with the same owner for her whole life and it looks like they kept poor Nina in a garage. She has been with the humane society for about 3 months now and is in desperate need of a home. She is so smart and loving, completely housebroken, knows all of her commands and would play fetch all day long. I believe the only reason we have not been able to place her is because she is not great with other animals. She is better outside of the kennel but gets very worked up when she gets taken out and there are dogs in the kennel next to her. She would make such a great pet for a family with kids that has no other animals. She is looking to get transfered to our Newington location but we would like to find a home or a foster situation before that happens because we are a quieter shelter and feel she would not do well there. For more information please e-mail info@cthumane.org or call 203-227-4137. Ask for Kim.

Danbury Animal Welfare Society   Bethel, CT   dogs@daws.org

Happy is a young, medium-sized male Cattle Dog/Collie mix. Happy absolutely LOVES attention and play time. He is an energetic boy who loves going on trips and is great in the car. Happy is involved in our in-shelter training classes. So far, he walks well on a leash, sits, stays and waits on command. What a good boy! Who doesn’t want a trained guy like this? We are seeking a home where he can continue his training and be given lots of love and attention. Happy has come a long way to find his very special forever home. DAWS rescued Happy from a high-kill shelter. Note: Adult home and dog experience required. If you are interested in Happy, please contact the Danbury Animal Welfare Society at dogs@daws.org.

CT Humane Society   203-227-4137

Hank is a 1 year-old altered male ACD mix. He was originally adopted from a farm in Montana and was dropped off at the shelter April 10 after his owner moved away. He was given run of the house and is housebroken. He does jump up on people, but knows basic commands (being food-motivated). He has a decent temperament: still puppyish, very energetic. He was a little guardy when we tested him for food possesion/aggression, but did not growl or bite; he has shown no possession of rawhide or toys. He may need some leash training as he bites on the leash when walked, but this could be due to being caged and not getting the level of exercise necessary for the breed. He is very kennel-aggressive towards the other dogs, which is why we are trying to get him into rescue. He has shown no dog aggression outside the kennel that I am aware of, but we have not officially tested him with other dogs.

MAINE

Bangor Humane Society   Bangor, ME   (207) 942-8902   adoption@bangorhumane.org

Sadie is a 2 year-old, purebred blue heeler. She was surrendered by her owner because of herding issues with cats and the older dog in the home. She would be best in a home without cats but would be fine with other non dominant dogs her size and age range. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and is housebroken. She can be a bit timid so a home with older children is recommended. If you can give this sweet girl a good forever home like she deserves, please contact the shelter. (Updated 6/28/2008)

The Animal Welfare Society   West Kennebunk, ME   (207) 985-3244 x 117   gail@animalwelfaresociety.org

Jimmy, a six year-old Cattle dog mix loves and adores his brother Chase who is a ten year old Keeshond. This famous duo is known for their gentle nature, sweet personality and remarkable good looks. Jimmy and Chase are a well bonded pair that go hand in hand complementing each other. Both willing to relish in the simple things life has to offer, these boys are asking for nothing more than a home where they can spend their retirement showering their human companions with love. Of course they look forward to daily walks to keep their blood flowing and senses going but most of all, a cozy warm bed to stretch out on. Each has a fondness for each other and perhaps another calm, gentle dog who would lounge in the sun with them. Neither Jimmy nor Chase have shared their home with a feline friend but may do well with a confident cat that has lived with dogs before and will always be fed separately. Jimmy loves a game of ball and will play fetch with you any chance he gets. Both enjoy a ride in the car and like to keep the windows cracked for some fresh air! These boys are looking for a home that has older children that can respect their space and give them plenty of time to just plain relax. Such a special pair deserves a special adoption fee so we have decided to waive the fee of one dog and have both go home together at the fee of just one adult dog adoption. Their big hearts are eager to settle in and enjoy the summer with their new found family. (Updated 6/1/2008)

Princess is a cattledog who came in because her owners could not keep her where they were living. They say she does well with kids but is leary of strangers. Like a typical ACD, she can be bossy around other dogs. She can also jump a 4-foot fence, so she is not for the faint of heart! She is one year old and has a pretty merle coat.

Molly is a happy, healthy dog who is a bit rambunctious and often doesn’t know her own strength. She needs to find a home where her new owners will work with her and give her a job to do: no lying around like a couch potato; she wants to work and play hard. When visiting, just ask to see Molly, who is the 5 year-old, female Australian Cattle Dog / Dalmation mix.

My name is Whip, because I’ve been told that I’m as smart as a whip. I listen well. I will sit, lie down and stay when told to do so. I am a 1 1/2 year-old neutered male Australian Cattle Dog. I am looking for a home with older children and plenty for me to do. I am an active fellow who needs to be kept busy. Oh yeah, if you haven’t noticed, I am missing one ear, but don’t worry, my hearing is just fine. It gives me that much more personality, don’t you think?

Queen Annes County Department of Animal Control   Queenstown, MD   410.758.2393   QACAnimalControl@qac.org

My name is Shelly. I might be a bit chubby but I am as sweet as I am chubby. I am new to the shelter so I’m a bit shy. I really like it when they give me lots of love in here. I am very well-behaved. I do not understand why I am here and really need to get into a loving home where I can love you back. Please consider taking me home.

Amelia is a 2 year old Australian Cattle Dog mix who was brought to our shelter as a stray. She is a wonderful dog, very loving and affectionate, but we feel she would be better off in a home with children over 10 years old.

Humane Center of Harford County   Fallston, MD 21047   (410) 836-1090  adopt@harfordshelter.org

Noah is a shy but sweet dog. At first he seemed a little fearful, but it didn’t take him very long to trust us and show just how nice he could be. He is about 3 years old and came in because his owners were moving and could not take him. Even though he is pretty good with other dogs and excellent with kids we believe he would probably do better in a calmer home. If you do have other dogs in your family, it is our policy to have you bring your other dog(s) up to the shelter to meet him. Noah has not been tested around cats. The shelters phone number is 410-836-1090 and there email is adopt@harfordshelter.org or the people interested in him can email me.

Medfield Animal Shelter   Medfield, MA   (508) 359-8989   medfieldshelter@gmail.com

Shelby is a one-year old Australian Cattle dog in need of a new home, because the family that has owned her since she was a puppy is grappling with some medical issues that make it hard for them to care for an energetic dog. She is up-to-date with her shots and was spayed at 6 months old. She is a very happy and energetic dog that is housebroken and attended puppy training classes. She needs a home where she has land or fenced in property to run and play as she is full of energy. She has been crate trained and all of her accessories will be provided to the new owner. Shelby is coming to the Medfield Shelter on 5/19, but we are accepting applications for her in advance of her arrival.

To apply to adopt Shelby, simply download and fill out our dog Adoption Application and return it by e-mail to: medfieldshelter@gmail.com, or fax it to 508 650-4626. Shelby’s adoption fee is $200.

The Medfield Animal Shelter does not have a staff, therefore all visits to the shelter must be scheduled in advance by calling (508) 359-8989. Hello, my name is Ranger, and I am at the shelter because my owners children are allergic to me. I may be an older guy, but BOY do I have energy. My favorite game in the whole world is fetch. I love to go outside and run around, I enjoy long romps in the woods, and I like playing with other dog friends. I am a cattle dog (do you know that means I’ve got Dingo blood in me?) and I have a lot of cattle dog personality quirks. That means that sometimes I like to herd things, and that could mean you! I would do best in an adult home, with a family who has had some experience with herding breed dogs in the past. Please come and meet me today. (Updated 5/14/2008)

She has been through extensive training at Rick Robbins Kennels and is very obedient. Roxy has a strong herding instinct and therfore needs an owner who is familiar with her breed and is able to handle her needs. She has been spayed and microchipped and is up-to-date on her shots. Roxy was recently tested with a male dog and did well but should probably not be placed in a home with small children. For more information please contact Candice at socaf@ochd.org.

Poughkeepsie Animal Control   Poughkeepsie, NY   (845) 485-3626   cmj11511@aol.com

Eli is an approximately 1 year-old neutered male red ACD available at the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY Animal Control. He weighs 43 pounds. Eli is very playful and always wants his belly rubbed. He would best not be placed with young children because of his fondness for jumping. Eli also needs training on how to walk properly on a leash. Eli is completely housebroken and will cry at the door when he needs to go out. He loves other dogs but plays roughly. It is not aggression, but just rough play. He LOVED his former owner’s hamster! He would pull the hamster into his chest and they would sleep together or Eli would just look lovingly at hamster and lay together for hours. He was also good with the neighbor’s cat and there was no aggression. He is a good watch dog, but is a best friend to visiting company.

Eli is up-to-date on all vaccines except lyme, though he was tested and was negative. He is heartworm-negative and is on preventative. He was loved in his former home, but was given up because they did not know how to train him. Eli needs an ACD-experienced home with an owner that has the time to give him. If interested, please contact Cindy at cmj11511@aol.com or call (845) 485-3626. (Updated 7/5/2007)

Niagara SPCA   Niagara Falls, NY   716-731-4368   info@niagaraspca.org

Sadie is a 9 month-old Australian Cattle Dog. She was surrendered due to a family member being allergic to her. She is reported to be housebroken and good with children and cats. Her owner was unsure whether she gets along with other dogs. She has been barking at the dogs she has walked by at the shelter, so make sure if you have a dog to let them meet her before doing an adoption. She is an outgoing girl with lots of energy. The breed is known to be very active and to become bored easily so she will need varied and exciting activities to keep her busy. This breed is also known to nip at the heels of small children as they run and play. This is not to hurt them, this is just part of their herding instinct. Please keep this in mind if you have young children. She weighs 27 pounds. Update 6/19/08: Sadie was introduced to a dog belonging to a family who wanted to adopt her. She definitely does not like another dog around and should therefore be considered as an only dog. (Updated 6/24/2008)

He is still very much a puppy and needs someone with a firm but loving hand. He does okay with some other dogs, but has a great interest in cats and will chase them. He is having a hard time being here at the shelter and keeps getting out of our kennels.

Rustin is an adorable male cattle dog who recently arrived at the Rockbridge SPCA in Lexington Virginia. Rustin is only about 8-10 months old and weighs around 45 lbs, with just a short stub of a tail. The shelter manager describes him as quiet, wiggly and sweet. K-9 New Life Center   Virginia Beach, Virginia   (757) 721-BARK   info@k9newlife.com

The shelter has a small male blue heeler, maybe 40 pounds, who is heartworm positive, but current on all other vaccines. He does not appear to be dog aggressive at all — no reaction to the dogs in the kennel. He is very submissive. If you raise your voice, he rolls on his back. He's not too interested in toys, but loves to give kisses and be petted. He has very soft eyes. He has been in the shelter since March and came from a hoarding/breeding situation. We walked him through the cat room. He showed interest, but not aggression even after a cat tried to swat at him. He appears to be a very sweet boy who needs a loving home. Please contact Carin Dombroski at 757-923-9688 or 757-630-8647 for more information.

My name is Mac. I am a deaf, purebred Australian Cattle Dog. I am 2 and 1/2 years old and weigh approximately 45 lbs. I am really smart and know hand signals so I don’t think my deafness is a disability at all. I have been waiting a while for my “forever home” and would like nothing more than to cuddle with you. I am completely house-trained and out of the destructive phase so I am a perfectly behaved gentleman in the house. I love to go for long walks adore having my tummy rubbed. I am not a really good car rider because I get very anxious (probably from a past experience), but I behave much better if I have a rawhide or something to chew on to calm my nerves. I love all people but small children can scare me since I can’t hear them coming. I will crawl into your lap if you let me, but I don’t like most dogs and cats. Do you have it in your heart to adopt me and get me out of the kennel where I currently live? If you’re interested in me, please contact Jodi at pawsitiveguidance@hotmail.com or call her at 550-7379.

I’m Bandit. I have some temperment issues that have probably come about from being mistreated and abused. I don’t really trust people, but after I have made up with you I love for you to scratch me through my run cage. If it’s a good day I love to play fetch. I probably would need to be spend alot of time with a trainer or a dog behaviorist to realize my true potential. (Updated 7/2/2008)
