This wonderful little guy is about 3 years old and had a tough start in life. A good Samaritan found him chained to a broken-down doghouse, starved and with a broken tail. Luckily, the “animal cops” intervened and rescued Sully. Despite his bad treatment, Sully holds no grudges – he adores all people and is incredibly sweet. He loves to give kisses and will try to be as close to you as he can get, whether that’s glued next to your chair or in your lap. His tail had to be amputated due to the break, so he now has a 4 inch stub that he wags a lot.
This adventurous pup was flown from the south to the northeast via the Pilots N Paws program, and handled three takeoffs and landings on one long day of flying! Check out his picture with the pilots who made it possible!
Sully gets along with other dogs as long as he’s introduced slowly – he can’t handle dog parks or doggie daycare settings, and he will get aggressive if dogs rush up to him suddenly. He’d be happy as an only dog or with a similar middle-aged or older canine companion. Check out his picture standing with his 60 pound ACD foster brother!
Sully has always lived in the country, and he’s in a rural foster home now. He reacts very fearfully to car traffic and busy streets, so he should go to a home in the country or quiet suburban type of area, where he won’t have to be walked on busy streets.
Like the smart ACD he is, Sully has learned to sleep quietly in a crate all night and can be put in a crate during the day once he has had his exercise. He’s been getting between 90 minutes and 2.5 hours of active exercise a day and is very relaxed after his play and hiking times. He is an avid digger and tug player (seems to have a touch of terrier in there, which might explain the small size) and his barks are high pitched like a smaller dog. He chases all wild animals and would not be safe with cats or small pets. He’s caught and killed mice and shrews in our garden. Sully is clean in the house as long as he is let out every few hours or crated/confined to a few rooms where he can be checked on. If given free roam of the house and not let out every 2-3 hours, he has peed on the floor. With time this should resolve. He has never chewed on furniture or anything but his own stuff.
Since Sully’s foster mom works from home, it’s not clear how he’d do alone every day while his people are at work. He sometimes will bark when we leave the house, but it seems to be only for a few minutes. Generally, if ACDs get the attention and exercise they need, they can handle being alone too.
This is a special little pup with a lot of love to give. He literally shadows his foster mom around the house and seems like he’d bond to the one who does most of his care (feeding, play, exercise). Please feel free to fill out an application if you have a cat-free, rural home and think he’d be a good match. Sully is being fostered in northeastern CT.
