Jesse is about 1 year old and has already had 8 pups, all of whom were dumped in a high-kill shelter in imminent danger of being euthanized — pretty sad for a dog who is housebroken. She loves to cuddle and is great with other dogs. She only wants to be loved like when she was a pup. Jesse is a great dog, not a high-energy heeler but quiet and very sweet. Could you be the one to make Jesse feel like she matters again? (Updated 7/10/2010)

Libby needs an experienced cattledog home — she is 120% cattledog. She loves to hike and swim and is very outgoing. She loves her squeaky toys, which have been great tools for training. She does not play well with other dogs. She needs an active family with older children. For more info please give us a call. (Updated 7/10/2010)

You’ve got to love Pistol — just look at that big smile on that cute face! Even though he can only hear very high-pitched sounds he is happy to be alive after being rescued by a few cattledog lovers before making his way to us. In a way it is a shame that he he hides his handicap well — we believe his owners did not even know and could not understand why he did not listen. Pistol is housebroken and loves toys — when he gets a toy in his mouth he runs around looking so proud. He still needs some work but he is looking for that owner who will give him that forever home. He is still just a baby. Are you looking for a hiking partner? He loves to play fetch and swim. He is very outgoing and very HAPPY. (Updated 7/10/2010)

We had Suzie as a pup. She was brought back due to her new owners not having enough time for her. She is only 6 months old
— still just a pup. She is great with other dogs and is about 99% housebroken. She can be a little shy at first but
she warms right up to you. So are you looking for a hiking partner? A best friend to sit on the couch with you on rainy days? Or when
the whole world is against you do you need that head on your knee saying I love you and I think you’re great?
Suzie is just looking to love someone who has time for her.

Friends of the New Haven Animal Shelter New Haven, CT (203)946-8110
Five-year-old Zazz was found in someone’s yard — she had been there for two days. No one called the shelter to report her missing, so more likely than not she was abandoned. You can also see Zazz’s video at http://www.youtube.com/fotnhas. No appointments needed. If you are interested in adopting this pet, please visit the shelter Monday through Saturday between 12:30 and 4:30 or call the shelter at (203) 946-8110. Proof of homeownership required (mtg statement, tax bill, etc.) or landlord approval required for renters. If you already have a dog, we require that your dog meet our dog, so bring him/her/them along. (Updated 4/25/2010)

Willie is quite the ham — just look at that big smile! You would never know he has had it quite rough — he was kept in a crate in his first home and was teased by children. In spite of this, he is house-broken and is otherwise fine in the house. He was rescued by someone who kept him in a very large crate outdoors until he came to us. He lives indoors now and is only kept in his crate when he sleeps and when his foster dad is at work. He would do best being the only pet and with children that are 10 or older. Willie is 3 years old. You can contact Willie’s foster dad Dennis at 860-884-2697. (Updated 1/16/2010)

Underground Dog Rescue Wilmington, DE 610-636-5180 DAllaband@MNAT.com
Pepper is a young female Aussie/ACD mix that Underground Dog Rescue rescued from living tied outside day in and day out for the first year of her life (she just turned 1 in February.) Her family agreed it was no way to live, and surrendered her to us about three weeks ago. She was in boarding for two weeks, and is now in a foster home and doing well being an “inside dog.” She previously had brief bouts of staying indoors at her owner’s father’s house, but never for very long &8312; just a day or two at a time.
Pepper loves to play with other dogs, and is learning how to behave with cats. And, amazingly, she is housebroken. Pepper is spayed and up-to-date on shots. Given her age and breed, she needs a home with lots of room to run and someone who will keep her busy ... If interested, please contact Donna at DAllaband@MNAT.com or call 610-636-5180. You can also visit www.udr.petfinder.com and fill out an application. (Updated 3/26/2010)

Pepper is a pure bred (but small) Australian Cattle Dog... and she lives up to her breed. She is being fostered on a pygmy goat farm and she loves being around the goats. And yes, she does try to herd them. She loves riding or running along side the 4-wheeler while her foster mom is feeding and tending the animals. She gets along well with other dogs but does best with dogs bigger than she is. She tried to herd smaller dogs and tends to bully them. She gets along very well with children but would be happiest where she can “work” outside with her new family. She is 2 years old and weighs 30 lbs. (Updated 8/6/2009)

Dogs Deserve Better Maine Portland, ME DDBMaine@yahoo.com
Holly is a sweet Australian Cattle Dog mix who came to our rescue almost two years ago as pup from an overcrowded shelter in the South. She nice medium-sized dog who is currently overweight at 52 lbs. Holly came to Maine and was adopted by a wonderful family. Unfortunately Holly’s family is going through some unexpected life changes that make it impossible for them to keep Holly. As a result, we are looking for an immediate temporary foster home for Holly. Can you help?
Our foster homes have first option to adopt the dogs in their care. This is a wonderful way to get to know a dog in your home environment before making a lifetime commitment. Holly is currently living peacefully with children. She is crate-trained and house-trained. She is gentle and loving with her humans. Holly knows basic commands such “sit” and “lay down.” She loves to play, especially interactive games like “fetch.”
Holly’s current family reports that she is well-behaved in the home when left alone — as long as the garbage is secured. Holly is approximately 2.5 to 3 years old. She is a herding breed and requires a great deal of exercise. She currently lives with parents who run and is accustomed to jogging 2 to 3 miles a day. Holly gets along with other dogs, and has attended Doggie Daycare in the past, but can randomly have issues with an occasional female dog. We do not know how Holly will get along with cats, so a foster home without felines to the ability to separate would be ideal. Holly recently underwent bladder stone surgery and is currently on a prescription food which we will supply to her foster home. Poor Holly has been through enough change in her short life. She is such a sweet girl — please give her a chance. If you can help Holly during this time of transition and turmoil, please contact DDBMaine@yahoo.com. Applicants with a fenced-in yard will be given preference. (Updated 7/21/2009)

Forever Home Rescue New England Walpole, MA joannewilkinson@verizon.net
Annie is a striking 1-2 year old cattle dog/shepherd mix with warm brown eyes and a charming set of mismatched ears (one stays
up, one flops down) whose pictures do not do her justice! She is full of affection and lots of personality and wants to please her
people. When Annie arrived at her New England foster home, she was fearful in new situations, but has improved dramatically. She has
made incredible strides in her new foster home and now her favorite activities are jumping on the bed to wake up her teenage boy with
kisses, cuddling (all the time!!) with her foster mom, playing with her two doggie siblings indoors and out, and taking walks in the
woods. Annie loves to play and run with her buddies, walks well on a leash, knows basic commands, and is crate trained. She is working
on house-training and will definitely be 100 percent soon. Most of her accidents occur when she hesitates to go outside (she is a big
scaredy cat). Annie loves to run and play, but she mostly loves affection and attention, rolling on her belly and nudging her
mom’s elbow for attention any chance she gets. She will do best and continue on her journey to becoming a great dog with a
family that is familiar with cattle dogs and herding dog breeds and their need for exercise and a willingness to continue to work
with her to build her confidence. At first Annie was nervous around her doggie siblings, but now she gets along fantastically with
them and would do best in a home with another active dog as she learns a lot from watching. Breed experience required. She weighs about
40 pounds, is healthy, spayed, and UTD on shots. To adopt or learn more about Annie, you must fill out an
adoption application.

Forever Home Rescue New England Walpole, MA joannewilkinson@verizon.net
Pepper has come back to us after being adopted into a busy home which is also a dog boarding facility. She is shy and the placement just wasn’t suitable for her. She needs a quiet home where she can relax. She is a sweetie pie, no aggression issues even though timid. She is also Ok with cats and is fine with other dogs. But a quieter environment is clearly in her best interests. She is now 10 months old and weighs around 42 pounds. She originally came into rescue as a puppy — pulled from a kill shelter in the south with her littermates. Her video shows her when she first arrived in MA at age 4 mos. Her littermates have all been adopted and have made wonderful pets. We think Pepper would do best in a home with another dog because she is not as shy when there are other dogs around. She will take time to warm up to whoever adopts her and a prospective adopter would just need to be prepared for that. We’d love to find someone willing to take her on as a work in progress, and Pepper will likely bring great rewards to her adopter as she makes progress. Can you give Pepper a quiet, loving home? To adopt or learn more about Annie, you must fill out an adoption application. (Updated 6/3/2010)

Private Foster number7jack@yahoo.com
Poli is a very handsome 8 month-old purebred male Australian Cattle Dog, looking for his Forever Home. He was purchased by a
family who did not research the breed and learned later how active this breed is. He’s a “no kids/no cats” guy who
needs a very active, patient, experienced owner with land and time to devote to him. I think the right home will get him to where he
needs to be behavior-wise. His previous owners never set boundaries and limits for him and left him in a concrete backyard in NYC.
I also think there may be a language barrier with him as his owners spoke Spanish. He’s good with other dogs after a slow
introduction. He’s very eager to learn and will work for praise alone. He’s never had an accident in the house.
He’s neutered and up-to-date with distemper/rabies/lyme/lepto. He is excellent off leash, a total Velcro dog. He would make a
great disc dog. He loves discs but would need to start this training from scratch. Poli is located in Burlington County, NJ. If
interested in adopting Poli, please contact Michelle at number7jack@yahoo.com.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but I beg to differ! My name is Oreo, and I beg quite well for treats and
drop into a very nice sit anytime my nose catches a whiff of one. I might be nine years old but there is nothing OLD about me except
my teeth and a bit of creeping grey fur around my big brown eyes. The vet said I’m the healthiest 9 year-old dog he’s
ever seen so I don’t let my yellowed teeth stop me from showing you a big grin. I love people and dole out sloppy kisses on a
regular basis. Nothing gets me more excited than seeing you pull out the leash for some exploring and lots of sniffing outside.
I do so enjoy the feel of sunshine on my face while stretching my long legs outside. I love to play tug and chewing on a good bone.
I don’t have a tail but I put my back end to good use wiggling so you know just how happy I am! Despite my puppyish joy in the
world around me, I do settle easily and find nothing more comfortable than a soft doggy bed or plush recliner. Oreo is a healthy
9 year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Australian Shepherd mix who is UTD on his shots, heartworm-negative, and neutered. Oreo is not
suitable for a home with cats. Oreo has had small children in his home but he’s very strong and might do better in a home
with older children. While Oreo has a strong personality, he doesn’t mind other dogs. Oreo’s military family had to
move to Japan so he’s looking for the next family to love him! Oreo is currently being fostered in Moncks Corner, SC.
Please contact Melissa at Carolina ACD Rescue & Rebound at carolinasrescue@yahoo.com
if you are interested in adopting Oreo.

Do you like kisses and cuddling? I am liberal with my kisses to my friends and love to get close for belly rubs. My name is
Carly and I am a one year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Pit Bill Terrier mix. I am strong of will and body but I am eager to
please and ready to learn all kinds of new things. I’m well on my way to perfecting HEEL, SIT, SHAKE, WATCH ME, and COME.
I really like those itty bitty salmon treats they offer me in exchange for showing them just how smart I am! I am being trained
to have some manners and walk easily on a leash. I am energetic and am looking for a way to use that herding instinct and exuberance.
I do settle quickly from playing into being very still so you can love on me more! Coming from two very smart breeds, I am hoping
to learn more tricks and manners and have enough brains to tackle it all. I am currently taking obedience classes, too! I just know
I’m smart and I need the right family to love me as much as I love them. My gorgeous cinnamon red coloring is very unique
and is not only in my speckled coat but in my big eyes and even my toenails. I am not a very big dog but have a huge heart. My
trainer says I have the most mobile ears and can aim then in any direction and the wrinkles on my face make her laugh when I pull
my ears straight up. I love people and I have a very outgoing personality. I am a little noisy when I meet other dogs but all
I want to do is play, play, play with the other dogs! We found out that I am very good at herding sheep as well. Carly is a year
and a half old, UTD on vaccinations, heartworm-negative, spayed and weighs about 35 pounds. Carly is being fostered in Charleston,
South Carolina. Please contact Melissa at Carolina ACD Rescue & Rebound at

if you are interested in adopting Carly.

Do you have cows or sheep? Do you need a right-hand man to help you run your farm? I’m the dog for you! They call me Dutch. I am full of energy, charisma, and intelligence. My favorite game involves the water buckets. There is no water bucket that is safe from me — I am a wizard at undoing any clasp, hook, or tie to knock over that water bucket. Splashing and rolling in the water occupies me for hours so my new home must come with a fresh supply of buckets for pure entertainment! But please put the hose away — I don’t find being sprayed as amusing as you do! You’ll find out just how fast I can run if you pull that hose out. I’m fairly positive that I am king of all I survey and get really jealous when I see my foster mom petting the other dogs here on the farm. I am strong and mighty but come with a squeaky bark that does my lion’s strength no justice. I’m stubborn but can be taught. I can show you just how smart I am. My foster mom says learning to obey will teach me what a happy boy I can be. I move with grace and balance despite just being a doggy youngster. I’m not just strong of body — I’m also strong of heart and love my people. You will never have to be afraid with me around to protect you. I am crate-trained and will quiet down for the night but I would like to be with you every chance I get. When the sun comes up, I’m ready for facing the day by your side. A little rest goes along way with me and my boundless energy is ready to tackle play or work or both anytime you are!
Dutch is a blue Australian Cattle Dog who is one year old. Dutch has been neutered and micro-chipped and is up-to-date on his shots and is heartworm negative. Dutch weighs about 38 pounds. Dutch is currently being fostered in Monroe, NC. Dutch should not be in a home with cats as he can’t resist chasing them. We are hoping to find a home that can provide a real job and space for this active, intelligent boy. He needs the training to be a good cowhand or herd some sheep but he’s got the brains and body to do so. Dutch is desperately in need of a home of his own and would be the perfect dog for a farm with space and fences. Dutch has no herding training but has expressed interest when exposed to sheep. He will need someone willing to take the time to train him but he will give you his whole heart. Please contact Dutch’s foster mom Janet Broome at (704) 989-0088 or e-mail our rescue at carolinasrescue@yahoo.com for an application. (Updated 1/4/2009)

Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League Gastonia, NC 704-460-7533 magdrlnc@yahoo.com
Dixie is a nine year-old Australian Shepherd and Harley is a seven year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix. Both are extremely sweet and love attention. They were taken in by one of our volunteers when their owner got sick with cancer and couldn’t care for them any longer. They have lived their whole lives together. Unfortunately, they are in a kennel situation and don’t get a lot of visibility because the other dogs at our rescue are great danes.
Dixie is not spayed, but can be before going to a new home/foster (unless for some reason the vet thinks she’s too old for it). She can get a bit fluffy and get matted if not groomed on a regular basis, but she is great for grooming and clipping. She is SUCH a good girl while we’re clipping her...even fell asleep the first time. Dixie is terrified of thunderstorms. She also has a few chipped teeth, but still eats well. She’s pretty dependant on Harley and sticks with her all the time. They live in the same kennel at the rescue. Harley is spayed and both are up to date on everything and heartworm negative. Harley is the more dominant female of the two, but they both seem very shy and a little scared when apart so we’d prefer to keep them together if at all possible. Both are very easy to handle and come when called.
Please contact Laurel Watson directly if you’re interested in giving these wonderful dogs a new leash on life — they surely deserve it. They’ve been in our rescue for almost 3 years now, so they really deserve a nice warm inside home for the holidays. (Updated 12/16/2008)

Olga and Dorothea Dessin SPCA Honesdale, PA 570-253-4037 dessin@ptd.net
Aztec is presently in foster care on a farm in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He is not compatible with chickens and thinks they would make a nice sit-down dinner. He has been good with most of the other 10 dogs at the household so it’s important that he meets the other dogs he is going to live with. Aztec’s foster parents love him and hope he will go somewhere that will be a forever home. Aztec is a stunning dog! This guy has a lot of energy that needs to be funneled into appropriate outlets. He’s very social and outgoing. Aztec can play rough and therefore we will not place him in a home with children. This dog is remarkably smart and will outsmart his owner if it’s not a good match! Aztec would do well with an active person that he can bond with and would love to be involved in lots of outdoor activities like hiking or being a jogging partner. Adoption applications are available at http://www.dessinshelter.com/Apps.html. (Updated 7/12/2010)

Sallie is a Australian Cattle Dog mix whose owner abandoned her and her sister. She is approximately 3 years old and a solid 50 lbs. Sallie is a little shy but warms up quickly and has already learned to walk on a leash. She is very loyal and believed to be housebroken. Sadie is a young purebred red Australian Cattle Dog that we rescued from a shelter. She was given up by her caretaker because she and their other dog didn’t get along. Sadie is very sweet and friendly and submissive to people, but she does not get along with other dogs so she needs to be the only animal. And although Sadie would probably be fine with older kids (12+), we think she would do best in an all-adult household. Cattle Dogs are a working breed, and she will need exercise and a place to run off her energy, so a large fenced yard would be ideal. Sadie is being fostered with the Furry Suits Rescue in Herndon, VA. If interested in adopting Sadie, please contact dogs@furrysuitsrescue.org or call (703) 889-5335. (Updated 12/3/2008)

Sadie is a complete love bug who wants cuddles and tummy rubs. She has LOTS of personality and always greets you with a smile! Sadie loves to play with her squeaky ball & will entertain herself if needed! She is a very smart girl and has the cutest wiggle when she walks and when she’s excited to see you (which is ALWAYS)! There is some more news about Sadie; As if she didn’t have enough problems, she had to have an eye removed because it was swollen so badly and was irritating her. We couldn’t just leave a gap, so we had her fitted with a prosthesis. Now, it turns out that she has lost vision in her other eye. Sadie is now totally blind, but she gets around pretty well, but is more dependent on her human. Still, through all this, Sadie is the champion love bug. Her nickname is “Hedgehog” and if you come meet her, you’ll see why.

New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue Scottsville, KY srbufo2@email.uky.edu
Patrick is a very, very well-behaved ACD mix. He is housebroken, neutered, crate-trained, walks well on a leash, and has pretty good recall (if there are no geese or cows to chase). “Velcro” should be his name since he loves to be near the person handing out the food or the loving. He sleeps on a blanket by his foster mom’s bed and will bark if he hears anything unusual. He is a very watchful and intelligent dog. Good looking too.
Patrick is 1.5 years old, a smaller guy, white with black spots. He’s one of New Spirit’s “honorary Aussies” — way too nice to leave behind in the shelter as we got there and realized he’s mostly ACD and Border Collie rather than Australian Shepherd.
His known commands include, here, sit, down, speak, shake, go lay down, and off. Patrick does well with other dogs, larger and smaller, and stays off the bed if asked. Patrick is fostered in Western Kentucky. (Updated 2/27/2010)
The dogs listed here have not been evaluated by the ACDRA, therefore we cannot vouch personally for them. The ACDRA does not know the parentage of mixes, therefore we cannot and do not assure that any stated mixes include Australian Cattle Dog. Potential adopters are advised that the best approach to selecting a companion is to objectively evaluate their own situation and needs and to match that with the personality and behavior of the adoptee, regardless of parentage.
