Our Foster Dogs

A dog rescued from a shelter typically needs a great deal of
socialization, medical care and affection. Our volunteer
foster homes provide this care so that these dogs are ready
to be adopted into a new family.

Please note: Adoptions from ACDRA foster families are restricted to the Mid-and North-Atlantic regions of the US, which includes the states between Maine and North Carolina.

If you would like to know more about the rescue dogs that we have listed on this page, please contact the foster home listed with each dog. Please fill out our website’s adoption questionnaire; this is the quickest way to start the adoption process.

Redd is a gorgeous, loving 3 or 4-year old red heeler. She was found as a stray in a tough part of New Jersey. She had been spayed at some point - so she must have been someone’s pet - but no one came to claim her. Redd is a petite 38 lbs., very active and healthy. She is current on shots.

Redd is living with 4 other dogs and gets along fabulously with all of them. She is enjoying her foster home and lives on 4 acres, and has had the chance to run with her foster siblings every day. She has bonded with our 3-legged female ACD and they stick close together. Redd is also living with a few cats and has made friends with them, but it took time. She might be better off in a home without cats.

Being a pure bred ACD, Redd is a really good eater, cleaning her dish two times a day! On the other hand, she’s a lady with treats, taking them very gently, unlike her JRT and Aussie foster brothers who tend to leave you with a bloody stump if you’re not careful!

Redd goes in her crate with no problem and is not afraid of the vacuum. She likes stuffed toys that squeak. She usually carries one back to bed with her. She didn’t appear to have much training when we got her but she has learned quickly. She’s extremely intelligent. She loves her people and has proven trustworthy. Possibly due to all the changes in her life, we’re still working on housebreaking. She has come a LONG way and now only has an occasional accident.

Redd is being fostered in Coatesville, PA. If you would like to see more photos of Redd, check out her Dogster page at: http://www.dogster.com/dogs/801860.

Lexie is a 3 year-old, spayed Australian Cattle Dog. Lexie came from a very high kill shelter in the eastern part of NC. She had a rough start but refuses to let that get her down. You see, her owner dumped her and her 5 week-old puppies at the shelter. Luckily, the ACDRA was able to pull Lexie and her one remaining puppy from the shelter before they were gassed. The other puppies were adopted from the shelter before ACDRA knew about them. Lexie’s puppy, Portia, has already been adopted by a loving family and she is doing well.

Lexie’s previous owners must not have taken very good care of her. They kept her outside and did not give her heartworm prevention or flea and tick prevention. Now, Lexie has heartworms. Her heartworms are going to be treated and then she will be started on heartworm prevention. Lexie also has flea allergy dermatitis to the point that she is covered in scabs, her hair is thin and brittle, and she has some hair loss. Now that she is on Frontline, those pesty fleas will not be able to cause her so many problems and her skin will heal. Without the fleas and with proper nutrition, her coat will grow back so she can be as beautiful outside as she is inside. Lexie also has partial paralysis on the left side of her face up to her left ear, from what the vet thinks was an untreated ear infection. The vet does believe that with time the paralysis will fade and she will be back to “normal”. If you just look at Lexie, you would never guess she had any paralysis and it certainly doesn’t slow her down. Click here to see a YouTube video of Lexie acclimating to her new surroundings.

Lexie absolutely loves people and is very playful. She wags her tail almost constantly and loves to give kisses to her foster parents. She does bark when people approach the house but then she showers them with affection. So far, she has met one of the resident Aussies and really likes him. She chases him around while he is playing ball. I don’t think it will be long before she is playing fetch too. Once she recovers from her spay, she will be introduced to the other resident dogs in her foster home. They are a little too rambunctious for her right now though. Lexie needs to be adopted into a cat-free home. She was never taught that kitties are friends and not food. She has a strong prey drive and feels like it is her job to keep yards free of wildlife.

Lexie is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and will begin heartworm treatment soon. She is crate-trained and hasn’t had any accidents in her crate or the house. Lexie is super smart and would do well with someone that will take the time to teach her obedience commands and shower her with the affection that she deserves. Lexie is a happy, loving dog that even though was dealt a difficult hand early in life, is not allowing it to affect her personality. If you would like to know more about this wonderful girl, please fill out our adoption questionnaire and then email lexie@acdra.org. (Updated 6/11/2008)

Jake is a handsome, approximately 3 year old blue male Australian Cattle Dog that was found as a stray in NJ. He is neutered and weighs 45-50 lbs. Jake is a very friendly dog and very people-oriented. He crates during the day and is housetrained. He will sit and lie down for a treat, and is learning to come when called. He likes to play with squeaky toys but is as likely to be found sitting at your feet or curled up next to you. He loves to be with people, often relaxing at their feet. He adores attention.

Jake would do well with an ACD experienced owner, a fenced yard, lots of exercise, and no children under 6. Although Jake is living with other dogs in his foster home situation, he would need to be placed with just the right match. Jake is being fostered in Reading, PA. If interested, please contact Andrea at jake@acdra.org. (Updated 6/3/2008)

Tex is a submissive, handsome, happy guy who is almost 2 years old. He has really blossomed since coming into foster care as he is fortunate enough to be fostered by a dog trainer! Tex has learned to walk on a loose leash and is being crate trained. He is receiving lots of socialization with all the dogs who come to obedience classes and with the many people and children who visit. He loves running along side the bicycle of his foster dad and has a high toy drive. He is a very energetic guy so he will need to go to a home that can devote a lot of time to exercising both is body and mind regularly.

He will need an owner who has ACD experience who is not a pushover, yet practices positive reinforcement training. Tex does not do well with harsh corrections.

Tex loves being close to his people and does fine with other dogs and older children. He is neutered, up-to-date on his vetting and is "tail-impaired". He is being fostered in Hampton, NH. If you are interested in Tex and contact us at: tex@acdra.org. (Updated 6/11/2008)
