Pete is a sensitive, smart boy who desperately needs a forever home. He was rescued in Florida 9 years ago where he was found abandoned by neglectful owners and has been living with an older couple in NC until this summer when sadly, one of his owners suffered a stroke and was moved out of state to be closer to family. Pete has been grieving ever since…
When his owners moved, Pete had nowhere to go. We brought him into our home where we currently have 16 rescue dogs hoping to integrate him into the “pack” until we could place him. This was extremely stressful for Pete who is truly a “people” dog. Pete prefers being an “only child” and does best when he is alone. He is a funny old guy; very set in his ways. He feels “responsible” for keeping order when he is around other dogs and becomes quite focused on keeping them in line. Needless to say, our other dogs did not react well to his “herding” instincts, and Pete ended up at the emergency vet with a dislocated jaw and multiple puncture wounds. (Ironically, none of the other dogs had any bite marks-all of the injuries were on poor old Pete!) Since that time we have had to keep him in a crate for his safety. All of his injuries are healed, however he is so depressed now it is heartbreaking. He misses his old life where he was able to spend time with the people he loved. Although he has spurts of activity throughout the day, his favorite thing is being inside and taking long naps on “his couch”.
We think Pete will be happiest and safest as a predominantly indoor dog with a fenced yard. Pete does best with a regular routine. New situations can make him a bit anxious and stressed out. For this reason, dog parks, large crowds and traffic can be a bit overwhelming. He is and loving, expressive and smart, but a bit goofy; very agile (took agility classes years ago) and has amazing, funny personality. He likes to “dress up” as you can see from the pictures! He loves to have his belly scratched and to cuddle.
He needs an experienced ACD owner who will give him a simple, steady life with the opportunity for regular exercise, but without too much excitement, a large, preferably fenced-in yard and people who like to stay home and spend time in the yard with him. He LOVES being outside when there are people around to interact with, but prefers to stay inside rather than be left alone outdoors. Please help Pete find a forever home. He would love to be part of your life. We are willing to help transport him to you. We are not asking for a rehoming fee - just for a good home where Pete can enjoy the rest of his years.
